Retention can depend on you. You, supervisor/manager/department head, hold the authority to make or break your employee’s day. Try asking for reviews. Give performance evaluations on schedule. And intentionally use the data you receive to shape your culture. It could mean a world of difference in your municipality. Learn to master your superpower and see how the actions you take today can make your employees want to stay for tomorrow.
Start implementing these positive nonverbals and see what happens. Watch your people become encouraged and work from a place of courage and passion. When new ideas are brought to you from your motivated team, greet them with actively listening ears, appropriately placed smiles, and nods. Be patient with your people and watch their respect for you grow.
Because this is a volunteer position, employees will have the impression that they can “flake out” on meetings. In the same vein, no one likes to be “voluntold”. So how do you ensure commitment, while not being a domineering sergeant about the whole thing?
